Storytime Spotlight: Fire Safety with Toddler Tikes

fire-safety

Fire safety is one of my favorite storytime themes!  We had a blast last week.  Here’s a closer look at the plan…

Welcome/Opening Songs: I wore my firefighter hat for this one!  As always, when we took a bow my hat fell off.  Cracks them up every time!

  • If You’re Happy and You Know It – Traditional
  • Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Letter of the Week: M

Fingerplay: Dance Your Fingers

Book #1: Fire Engine No.9 – Mike Austin

This was definitely the crowd’s favorite book.  They really liked making all the loud fire engine noises!

Flannel: Here is a Firefighter

They LOVED this flannel!  The first time through the rhyme, I paused to let them fill in the words and put the clothing articles on the wrong spot (e.g. pants on head).  We repeated the rhyme a second time after the toddlers taught me all about where clothes are supposed to go.  🙂

Here is a firefighter!

Here are his pants.

Here is his coat,

and here is his hat.

Here are his gloves,

Here are his boots.

Here is his mask,

And his fire hose too!

Action Song: Hurry, Hurry, Drive the Fire Truck (Lap Bounce with Shakers)

Once we were dressed, we were ready for action!  This song was so much fun.  I encouraged the parents to put their young toddlers in their laps and bounce fast/slow with the song while we acted out the lyrics.  The toddlers loved being raised in the air for “climb the ladder!”

to the tune of Little Red Wagon

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck!

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck!

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck!

Ding ding ding ding ding!

Hurry, hurry, turn the corner!

Hurry, hurry, turn the corner!

Hurry, hurry, turn the corner!

Ding ding ding ding ding!

Hurry, hurry, climb the ladder!

Hurry, hurry, climb the ladder!

Hurry, hurry, climb the ladder!

Ding ding ding ding ding!

Hurry, hurry, spray the water!

Hurry, hurry, spray the water!

Hurry, hurry, spray the water!

Ding ding ding ding ding!

Slowly, slowly, back to the station.

Slowly, slowly, back to the station.

Slowly, slowly, back to the station.

Ding ding ding ding ding…

Book #2: Firebears, the Rescue Team – Rhonda Greene

Had to skip a few pages with this one, as the toddlers were getting a little tired.

Craft: Shape Firetrucks

This is such a fun craft!  If you let the kiddos really do their own thing (like Stacy at Things to Share and Remember), it tells you a lot about their development.
